1Xtra Presents: An Evening with John Legend

Monday 13th October 2008

In an exclusive performance for the UK's number one black music station, BBC 1Xtra, America's multi-platinum soul-singer, John Legend, swooned the crowd to promote his forth coming third studio album, Evolver; set to be released on 20th October.

Held in The Bloomsbury Ballroom in Holborn, the unique venue helped set the mood for the soul-filled evening, with purple lights dusting the walls and a glistening black piano grandly placed in the centre of the stage. As more and more people filled the room, it was clear the anticipation to see one of the most talented singers, songwriters, and pianists of our time was high.

At around 9.30pm the intimate show began, with DJ Ronnie Herel from 1Xtra introducing the Legend himself. Decked out in a black leather jacket over a diamanté Barack Obama t-shirt, which displayed Obama's now infamous slogan 'Change' in large capital letters, John Legend's humble demeanour and genuine charisma immediately lit up the stage.

Opening with 'Used to Love U', the second single from his debut album Get Lifted, John Legend hyped the crowd along with his energetic team of backing vocalist and band behind him. Amongst the band were three lively trumpeters who danced as well as they played, helping to make the showcase as memorable as it was. Other favourites, such as 'I Can Change' and current hit 'Green Light' were also performed.

The high point of the night was when the concert was stripped to the bare essentials – flashing lights turned off, band and vocalists out of sight – leaving John Legend and his piano to perform his Grammy-winning hit 'Ordinary People'; his raw vocals resonating around the modest room and sending chills throughout the crowd.

The concert was indeed a success. Performing to a crowd of less than a hundred, Legend made his show as dynamic as that of a performance to a few thousand. Showcasing a variety of hits from his past albums, as well as tunes from new album Evolver, John Legend sang and played live just as remarkably as he does on his records, proving that his talents are unquestionably that of a Legend.
